Showcase Exhibition at the House of Beethoven’s Mother From Picture to Myth – Beethoven’s live mask and its history
Duration: 29th April to 2nd September 2018
To this day, the image you have in mind when you think of Beethoven, his physiognomy and facial expression is strongly affected by the looks of the mask that has been taken from the composer’s face in the year 1812.
Therefore, the special exhibition in the house of Beethoven’s mother concentrates on this extraordinary object. It will show how the face print came into being and it will also raise the question how far the idea we have of Beethoven’s looks and personality is justified. Using selected examples, the exhibition will additionally give an insight to the success story of the mask, which has an extraordinary influence on almost every figurative representation of Ludwig von Beethoven to the present day.
